Qashqai woven rugs from Southern Persia

Bold. Simple. Highly personal.

These are the distinctive traits of South Persian tribal rugs over the centuries. Beginning with hand-spun yarns dyed with natural colors, nomads transform simple raw materials from their own flocks into enduring works of art. these ancient organic traditions reached high artistic levels in South Persia, where nomadic way of life -and the art it yields- has survived into our present era. With this history dating back thousands of years, Qashqa'i rugs are both ancient and thoroughly modern, as authentic, harmonious, and inspiring as the lifestyles which gave birth to and sustained these rich veins of weaving heritage.
The carpets are created to no set design.
All the patterns spring from the imagination of the knotter and reflect her experiences during the four to ten months of the carpets creation. The blend of old tradition and personal freedom produces a unique, inimitable work

Whether tending to their sheep or chatting to other women, the women of nomadic tribes use every spare minute to card and spin the long-fibred Zagros wool by hand.
Since the tensile strength of the spun fiber is generally insufficient, the nomad women twist two or more spun fibers together to make a stronger yarn.

Most of the plants used for dyeing grow in the region of southern Iran.
In addition to traditional recipes they have developed their our own formulae.
Precise color recipes allow the same shades to be reproduced.
Thanks to good mordents they have achieved incredibly brilliant colors and optimum absorbency into the wool.

Carpets are also finely woven often times 250 knots per square inch on a steal loom which sets these wonderful weavings in a call apart from loosely woven thick "gabbeh rugs" which are typically mass produced on the market.

And now an introduction to color!
